After opening on Saturday 23rd September as part of the 850th Celebration of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Royal Charter, Astley’s Astounding Adventures is set to take the New Vic stage by storm during its run up until 21st October.
Astley’s Astounding Adventures, set in the late 18th century, tells the story of the man from Castle, Philip Astley, the native son of Newcastle-under-Lyme who transformed the world of entertainment by creating the spectacular phenomenon we all know and love – the circus!
With history brought to life by director Theresa Heskins and Vick Dela Amedume MBE, this production brings the magic of the circus by a talented 18-strong company.
With some New Vic favourites joining the cast including Michael Hugo, Gareth Cassidy, Danielle Bird, Nicholas Richardson and Nicholas Shaw as well as many others making their local debut, the on stage chemistry makes for a show that really engages and entertains the audience as well as guaranteeing a laugh (or several).
Behind the scenes, the masterful wordsmith responsible for this captivating tale is none other than Staffordshire-born writer Frazer Flintham.
This show isn’t just your run-of-the-mill theatre production. It’s a part of an innovative annual program developed in partnership with the New Vic and Upswing. Their aim? To experiment with the fusion of theatre and circus, pushing the boundaries of this combined art form. Prepare to be wowed as you witness a breathtaking blend of fast-paced action, side-splitting humour, gripping drama, and awe-inspiring circus acts.
And for those of you who may have caught the original production back in 2018, don’t worry; you’re in for a treat! The revival promises all the jaw-dropping spectacle of the original show, along with some exciting new surprises thrown into the mix.
