Appetite and Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District (BID) are delighted to announce that the award-winning circus inspired The Homecoming is returning to the streets of Newcastle on Saturday 26 June.
The Homecoming, supported by Newcastle Borough Council, is a thrilling day of outdoor inspired circus taking place right here in the home of modern circus itself, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Newcastle BID was awarded an Arts Council England grant back in 2019 to fund two years of The Homecoming. After having to postpone the event last year due to the COVID restrictions the dazzling line-up for this year is confirmed.
The Homecoming brings the magic of contemporary circus into the heart of Newcastle town centre for a thrilling day of free outdoor entertainment, from gravity testing acts to giant egg-ventures, live action cartoons full of slapstick comedy to projectile-blasting contraptions. The 2018 event won a national award for putting the town on the map during the 250th anniversary celebrations of the creation of the modern circus by local man Philip Astley. Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1742, Astley was the son of a cabinet maker who grew up to become the father of the modern circus, developing the 42-foot diameter ring still used in circus across the work today.
