New Mural Celebrates Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Market Heritage on Hassell Street

A stunning new mural paying tribute to Newcastle-under-Lyme’s rich market heritage has been unveiled on Hassell Street, on the side of Nail Essence, forming a vibrant gateway to The Stones Market.

Commissioned by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and Newcastle-under-Lyme BID, the mural is the latest addition to the town centre’s public art, offering an uplifting celebration of Newcastle’s enduring identity as a proud market town.

Working closely with lead artist Rob Fenton, the project team explored the Brampton Museum Archives, selecting a series of historic photographs that captured the life and evolution of the market through the ages. These images provided the inspiration for the mural’s final design, reflecting how the market has changed while remaining a much-loved part of the town’s story.

One particularly striking image that shaped the design was taken during the town’s octocentenary celebrations in 1973, capturing the vibrant hustle and bustle of market life. Featured prominently in the image were the Broom brothers, well-known greengrocers on The Stones at the time, who are now immortalised in the mural. The mural’s bold colour palette draws directly from this historic photo, while also giving a nod to the bright stripes of the market canopies seen over the years.

The mural was brought to life on site by lead artist Rob Fenton, assisted by fellow artist Ethan Lemon. As they worked, the artists enjoyed regular interactions with members of the public, many of whom stopped to share their own memories and stories of Newcastle’s market, a living reflection of the community spirit the mural aims to capture.

Lead Artist, Rob Fenton said:

“This project has been a real joy to work on. Exploring the archives with the team and seeing the history of the market was incredibly inspiring. We wanted to create something that not only honoured the past but also added colour, positivity and pride to the town today. Large scale murals like this make art accessible to everyone, bring heritage to life and transform public spaces into something people can connect with.”

Cllr. Stephen Sweeney, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Finance, Town Centres and Growth, said:

“The council is pleased to be involved in this latest creative project in Newcastle town centre, once again delivered by Rob Fenton and his talented team.

“The mural is more than just paint on a wall; it’s a vibrant celebration of our community’s spirit, stories and shared identity. It transforms the town centre into a space of connection and pride.

“Our older market traders on The Stones recognise the fruit seller as a character. Ethan Lemon became a trader himself for a national competition and won our Young Trader of the Year award. His street art sold well and he made the regional stage.”

Newcastle-under-Lyme BID Manager, Charlotte Pearce adds:

“Markets have inevitably changed over time and while we may not see the crowds of years gone by, Newcastle-under-Lyme remains a proud market town, home to our general market stall holders who have seen the town evolve over the years as well as a growing programme of event markets.

This mural is a wonderful way to honour that heritage, brighten up the town centre and create a real talking point for residents and visitors. The BID are thrilled to support projects like this that enhance the public realm, celebrate the town’s identity and engage the community. Public art plays a powerful role in place making, drawing visitors in and encouraging people to explore the town centre and this mural has already sparked so many positive conversations.”
